Jennifer Lopez Says Google Images Was Created Because Of Her Iconic Green Versace Dress

Jennifer Lopez is dishing on the dress that catapulted her status to fashion icon.

The 49-year-old multitalented star sat down in a candid video, casually wearing a chunky sweater and glasses, posted on Friday for a new series called “Moments of Fashion” on her YouTube channel.

Lopez recounts when she wore the now famous green jungle print Versace gown with plunging neckline that went down to her waist, which required lots of tape: “I was so securely stuck into that thing,” Lopez shared in the video. “There was going to be no mishaps.”

The pop star revealed it was a last-minute decision — one her former stylist wasn’t keen on since the gown was previously worn by others.

J.Lo completely made it her own and blew everyone out of the water when she stepped out on the red carpet at the 2000 GRAMMY Awards in the gown, when her hit “Waiting For Tonight” was nominated in the Best Dance Recording category.

Although she did not win, the dress put her on the map more than ever.

“It was a frenzy,” she described the vibe of the red carpet that night. “The flashes started going in a way that it’s not usually. There was an extra kinetic energy there.”

Lopez even got an ovation from the audience when she went onstage to present an award with “The X-Files” actor David Duchovny.

“It just goes to show you the power of fashion and the power of those types of moments,” Lopez said of the gown’s pop cultural effect. “And I know people try to make it frivolous at times, but what those things do is they give people an inspiration. It puts a beautiful moment out into the world.”

“One dress can change the trajectory of how people dress for the next ten years,” she continued. “It’s a crazy impact that fashion can have.”

The “Medicine” singer revealed the impact was so huge that Google Images launched because everyone wanted to search for the dress.

“And then years later I found out that because of that night and because of that dress, Google images was actually created.”

Lopez tearfully concluded the video with an emotional tribute to Luigi Massi, one of the designers at Versace who passed away early April. Massi was Donatella Versace’s right-hand man and collaborated with Lopez for over 20 years. Lopez revealed he was in the process of creating her dress for this year’s Met Gala.

“We heard that he just passed away in middle of making my Met Ball gown,” Lopez said. “And I was one of the first people that they called because he said that he had such an amazing time creating looks for me. And they know how much I loved him and how much fun we had.”

Lopez is to be honoured in June with the Fashion Icon Award at the CFDA Fashion Awards in June. The Met Gala will take place on May 6.
