Prince Harry has shared his support for transgender children as a controversial charity is welcomed by the Royal Foundation.
The Duke of Sussex met with Susie Green, CEO of Mermaids, the UK’s leading charity supporting gender variant and transgender children, as part of the Royal Foundation’s continued efforts in the field of mental health.
Campaigners hope that the duke’s support will help change public perceptions of transgender people, particularly trans children. Green said the prince’s endorsement is “hugely beneficial” and that his words will be “massively useful for us to be able to feed back to young people.
“I think it’s always really important to young people to see that people with the authority and credibility that Prince Harry has are supporting them and are listening and acknowledging the fact that they exist,” she said.
Mermaids has faced some criticism in recent years from those who believe children are too young to make a decision on matters such as gender reassignment surgery or other medical options encouraged by the charity.
The Royal Foundation is the primary philanthropic and charitable vehicle for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
