On Tuesday, Merriam-Webster announced that it is adding the word “stan” to the dictionary, citing the rapper’s 2000 single “Stan” as its source.

“Stan” was added to the dictionary in both noun form (“an extremely or excessively enthusiastic and devoted fan”) and verb form (“to exhibit fandom to an extreme or excessive degree: to be an extremely devoted and enthusiastic fan of someone or something”).

The term is derived from the name of the character Stan in Eminem’s song, a fan obsessed with his favourite rapper to the point of murder and suicide.

The move by Merriam-Webster to add the word “stan” to their dictionary comes after Oxford English Dictionary did the same back in 2017.
