Netflix Responds To Rumours That ‘The Office’ Will Soon Leave The Streaming Service

Fear not, your pals at Dunder Mifflin aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

On Wednesday, Netflix decided to address the latest wave of rumours that the mega-hit sitcom, “The Office”, could be leaving the streaming giant in the days ahead.

“Hello it’s me with your regularly scheduled reminder that ‘The Office’ will be on Netflix until 2021 – at least!” Netflix tweeted.

The statement is in response to a new article by the Wall Street Journalwhich reports that NBC has begun discussing taking the show back in 2021. The article also provides Nielson data confirming that the comedy is Netflix’s most popular show. So, should the show leave the streaming service in two years, it would be a significant loss.

In a statement directly to ET Canada, Netflix said, “Looking at overall watch time skews towards titles with many seasons. Most Netflix originals have three or fewer seasons at most. It’s why we focus on the individual shows or films members watch, as opposed to how much time they spend on one series versus another. And if you look at most watched titles, Netflix originals accounted for 10 out of 10 in the last quarter, or 21 out of the top 25.”

The show, which aired from 2005 to 2013, explored the lives of employees at a drab paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Not only did it become an important vehicle for Steve Carell, but it introduced audiences to John KrasinskiMindy Kaling, Rainn Wilson, Ed Helms and Jenna Fischer.

And this isn’t the first time there have been rumblings that the show might be leaving the accessibility of Netflix. In January, when NBCUniversal announced that, like WarnerMedia and Walt Disney, they were launching their own streaming service, rumours followed that the sitcom would likely end up there.

Similarly, late last year, fans shared their concerns over notifications that Netflix would be losing “Friends” when 2019 arrived. The public outcry led to speedy negotiations, which resulted in the streaming service keeping the hit sitcom for another year for a whopping $100 million, ET learned.

Then, Netflix released a post online featuring Ross (David Schwimmer) wearing a costume from a classic moment on the show. The caption read, “The Holiday Armadillo has granted your wish: ‘Friends’ will still be there for you in the US throughout 2019.”
