The late Gord Downie is being honoured for his humanitarian work.
The Tragically Hip frontman, who passed away from cancer in 2017, has been announced as the 2019 recipient of Canadian Music Week’s Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award.
“His legacy continues to resonate through his music and lyrics and, most importantly, through the growth and enterprise of The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund,” said Slaight Family Foundation CEO Gary Slaight.
The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund works to create the path to reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians.
“Gord Downie created a legacy during his final years, dedicated to creating a positive change in Canada. This legacy demonstrates how just one story can inspire an entire generation,” said Canadian Music Week president Neill Dixon. “The compassion and determination of Gord Downie is at the heart of the ‘Humanitarian Spirit’ Award and we are thrilled to celebrate him at the Canadian Music & Broadcast Industry Awards.”
