Pharrell dialled his entire contact list for his inaugural Something in the Water festival.
The “Happy” singer was forced to cancel day one of his new festival in Virginia Beach, but more than made up for it on Saturday. Pharrell brought out an all-star suite of rappers from Jay-Z and Diddy to his fellow N.E.R.D cohorts.
Something in the Water boasted one surprise after the next. Early on, Pharrell introduced Snoop Dogg for performances of “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and “Who Am I? (What’s My Name?)”
The 90-minute set was titled “Pharrell and Friends” and that is exactly what it was. Later in the evening, Tyler the Creator arrived and treated fans to “Who Dat Boy” and “See You Again.”
Not one, but two moguls of hip-hop also stepped to the stage. Jay-Z joined Pharrell for “Frontin'” before taking off with “Public Service Announcement”, “Izzo (H.O.V.A.)”, “Excuse Me Miss” and “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me).”
Timbaland performed, but microphone issues meant his entire first song was inaudible for concertgoers. Missy Elliot proved to be the remedy with banging renditions of “Get Ur Freak On”, “WTF (Where They From)” and “Lose Control”.
Diddy’s billed performance boasted “Finna Get Loose,” “Mo Money Mo Problems,” “It’s All About the Benjamins” and “I Need a Girl.” Busta Rhymes also joined Diddy onstage.
Something in the Water takes place in Virginia Beach. The billed lineup included Migos, Pusha T, SZA, Janelle Monae, Diplo, Travis Scott, Usher, Gwen Stefani and more.
