‘Star Wars’ Actor Peter Mayhew Dead At 74: Harrison Ford And George Lucas Release Statements

Best known as playing the big-hearted Chewbacca in “Star Wars”, actor Peter Mayhew has died at the age of 74.

His family announced the news on Twitter, writing, “The family of Peter Mayhew, with deep love and sadness, regrets to share the news that Peter has passed away. He left us the evening of April 30, 2019 with his family by his side in his North Texas home.”

They also issued a statement that outlined his work, not only as an actor but as an active campaigner for many non-profit organizations.

He is survived by his wife Angie and their three children. “His kindness, generosity and care will live on in the Peter Mayhew Foundation with Angie taking the helm as his voice,” read the statement. His family asked that in lieu of flowers to please make a donation to the Peter Mayhew Foundation.

Both George Lucas and Harrison Ford issued statements on the death Mayhew.

Lucas called him “a wonderful man.  He was the closest any human being could be to a Wookiee: big heart, gentle nature… and I learned to always let him win. He was a good friend and I’m saddened by his passing.”

While Ford called in a “kind and gentle man, possessed of great dignity and noble character.” He added, “We were partners in film and friends in life for over 30 years and I loved him. He invested his soul in the character and brought great pleasure to the Star Wars audience.”
