Awkwafina Struggles To Tell ‘A Good Lie’ In New Trailer For ‘The Farewell’

By Brent Furdyk.

A new trailer has just been released for “The Farewell”, a poignant dramedy from director Lulu Wang that’s described as being “based on an actual lie.”

That lie involves a Chinese-American named Billi (played by Awkwafina), who learns that her beloved grandmother is dying of cancer; according to Chinese tradition, however, the family doesn’t tell her that she’s dying, but instead concocts a plan to bring the entire family together for a rushed wedding in order to make her final days celebratory.

“It’s a good lie,” Billi is told by her family, but she remains uncomfortable with the deception even as she musters up smiles while posing for family photos.

“Life is not just about what you do, it’s more about how you do it,” her grandmother — nicknamed Nai Nai — tells Billi, making her smile by adding, “stupid child.”

Following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, look for “The Farewell” to hit theatres on July 12.
