Tom Hanks On How His Lifestyle Led To Diabetes: ‘I Was A Total Idiot’

After revealing he was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2013, Tom Hanks is reflecting on his lifestyle choices that led to the diagnosis.

“I’m part of the lazy American generation that has blindly kept dancing through the party and now finds ourselves with a malady,”; he tells the Radio Times. “I was heavy. You’ve seen me in movies. You know what I looked like. I was a total idiot.”; The 59-year-old Hanks admits he should have taken better care of himself when he was younger. Now, he’s dealing with the consequences of poor diet choices and habits.

At first the “Bridge Of Spies”; actor thought he could get a grip on his diet by making small alterations to his meals. “I thought I could avoid it by removing the buns from my cheeseburgers,”; Hanks explains. “Well, it takes a little bit more than that.”; Hanks is committed to shedding some pounds and living a healthier lifestyle.
“My doctor says if I can hit a target weight, I will not have Type 2 diabetes anymore.”;
