Alyssa Milano offered her suggestion for how to resist the controversial new law in the state of Georgia criminalizing abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected, and found herself hit with a wave of backlash.
In a tweet issued on Friday, the former “Charmed” star called for women to go on a “sex strike” until the legislation is repealed.
“Our reproductive rights are being erased,” wrote the 46-year-old actress. “Until women have legal control over our own bodies we just cannot risk pregnancy. JOIN ME by not having sex until we get bodily autonomy back. I’m calling for a #SexStrike. Pass it on.
Milano followed up with another tweet, telling women, “Protect your vaginas, ladies. Men in positions of power are trying to legalize them.”
Milano’s initial tweet, however, quickly received backlash from the Twitterverse, and not just from the usual right-wing, conservative voices who typically criticize her.
One of those people was Evan Rachel Wood who said she worries “this feeds into the religious belief that sex is for procreation and never for pleasure.”
