Berklee College of Music awarded Missy Elliott and Justin Timberlake with honorary doctorate degrees on Saturday.
Musical director and composer Alex Lacamoire was also rewarded for his work in “Hamilton”, “Dear Evan Hansen” and “In The Heights”.
“This year’s honorary doctorate recipients are being recognized for their achievements and influences in music, and for their enduring global impact,” a statement to CNN read.
Missy Elliott shared her excitement on Twitter, writing, “CREATE YOUR OWN LANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sincerely Dr. MISSY ELLIOTT,” with a video of her dancing with her diploma. “Thank you for this Honorary Doctorate Degree I am SO HUMBLED.”
“Ooooh y’all messed up now. Turned me into a doctor! Y’all messed up!” Timberlake said in his own video.
Lacamoire took a more serious approach. “Being honoured in this way by my alma mater means the world to me, you guys,” he said.
Past recipients that Berklee College of Music has given honorary doctorates to include Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Annie Lennox, Willie Nelson and Lionel Richie.
