Madonna is set to pay tribute to her late friend and fellow artist, Prince, at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards later this month.  No further details of the performance have been revealed at this time.

The decision to have Madonna honour Prince was met with some negative reaction, sparking an online petition against the performance.  Some argued that  musicians who were more closely aligned with Prince should be involved and the tribute should not be a solo performance by Madonna, while others argued that a black artist should spearhead the tribute.

The show’s executive producer spoke with The Associated Press about the tribute, standing by the decision to have Madonna perform.

“Listen, I think everybody is entitled to their opinion and everyone can have their own opinion, but I will say that we are honoured and could not be more excited for Madonna to be on the show and to pay tribute to someone that was her friend and her peer and her colleague,”; Mark Bracco said in an interview on Tuesday. “I think it’s going to be fantastic.”;

“It’s going to be very, very intimate and very respectful, and I think it’s something that is really going to pay tribute to Prince as the incredible, groundbreaking artist that he was and the influence that he had on music”;, Bracco elaborated.
