A petition launched by a disgruntled “Game of Thrones” viewer, imploring HBO to remake the final season and hire new writers who aren’t “woefully incompetent,” continues to gather steam, with more than 800,000 people piling on to sign.
“[Showrunners] David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on,” reads the petition, which is seeking a million signatures and seems likely to get them.
“This series deserves a final season that makes sense,” the petition continues. “Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!”
“Riverdale” star Lili Reinhart, however, was quick to point out that the fan-led effort is nothing short of “ridiculous.”
Responding to an Instagram post linking to a Variety article about the petition, the 22-year-old actress laid down a little TV knowledge.
“This is not how television works…” she wrote in her comment. “TV shows are not fan service. It’s ridiculous of people to think they can demand creative change from artists.”
Backlash to the swan-song season of “Game of Thrones” — which ends its eight-season run this weekend — has been building throughout the season.
In an interview with Esquire last month, “GoT” star Kit Harington revealed he was fully expecting the final season to face a drubbing by critics and had a blunt message for those who complain.
“I think no matter what anyone thinks about this season — and I don’t mean to sound mean about critics here — but whatever critic spends half an hour writing about this season and makes their negative judgement on it, in my head they can go f**k themselves,” said Harington.
The series finale of “Game of Thrones” airs on Sunday, May 19.
