Oprah Winfrey proved she’s the queen of giving once again as she surprised a New Jersey High School with $500,000 Friday.
Winfrey heard about a programme called “Lights On” at West Side High School in Newark, so decided to surprise students and faculty with a pizza party.
The programme was created by the school’s principal Akbar Cook and designed to keep students off the street on Friday nights.
According to WPVI, students can play basketball, video games, board games, pool and more between the hours of 6 p.m. and midnight.
Students took to social media to share clips of Oprah’s visit, with them cheering loudly as she announced the generous donation.
The TV mogul said, “So I heard about West Side and all the great things that are happening here. So I’m going to leave here tonight and leave you with a half a million dollars.”
Winfrey, who was pictured holding hands with Principal Cook in an array of pics shared by him, added: “Everybody always talks about the [students’] grades. You can’t start to talk about the grades unless they feel safe, unless they feel seen, unless they feel respected, unless they feel valued.”
