Actor Jason Mitchell was been dropped from “The Chi” along with several other projects, with Variety reporting that Mitchell will no longer be in the Netflix film “Desperados” or the third season of “The Chi”. His reps UTA, Authentic Talent and Literary Management also dropped him.
According to Deadline, Mitchell’s firing reportedly has to do with an off-set incident during production of “Desperados”, noting that the “incident was investigated immediately and thoroughly, leading to Mitchell’s termination.”
Mitchell has been in high demand after his breakout role in “Straight Outta Compton”, but was investigated in 2016 for reportedly slamming a woman into the ground in Boston.
Following Mitchell’s firing, “The Chi” showrunner Ayanna Floyd (who took over showrunning duties from series creator Lena Waithe after the first season) opened up to The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that she and an actress on the show had both reported Mitchell’s on-set behaviour to HR.
According to THR, Mitchell’s firing from “Desperados” may have been the catalyst for his being fired from “The Chi”, but Floyd maintains his conduct on the Showtime series was common knowledge on the set, with both Floyd and actress Tiffany Boone making HR complaints about Mitchell.
And while Waithe has claimed she wasn’t made aware of Mitchell’s misconduct until after the first season, Floyd says that isn’t true.
“When I took the helm in season two, it was Lena who informed me of the issues between Jason Mitchell and Tiffany Boone from season one, and that Tiffany was thinking of leaving the show because of it,” says Floyd in a statement to THR. “As a result of this information, I discussed Tiffany’s claims with the studio’s HR department and set up HR presentations for the writers, cast and crew. Ultimately, everyone was well aware of Jason’s behaviour and his multiple HR cases, including Lena, the creator and an executive producer of the show, who is very involved at the studio and network level.”
Floyd adds, “As showrunner, I did everything I could to deal with his behaviour, by speaking with the studio’s HR department multiple times and instructing one actress to call HR herself, before I became a target of his rage and inappropriateness, and had to report him to HR, as well.”
Waithe has also issued a statement, which doesn’t challenge Floyd’s account. “I think Tiffany is a wonderful actress and an extremely brave woman. I wish her nothing but success in the future,” reads Waithe’s statement. “I look forward to getting back to work on season three.”
“Told of Floyd’s statement, the source close to Waithe said the showwrunner did inform Waithe of the ongoing conduct but said she would handle it,” reports THR, noting that Floyd will not be returning to “The Chi” as showrunner for season three.
In addition to being fired from “The Chi” and being dropped by his agent and management team, Mitchell has now lost out on his MTV Movie & TV Award nomination.
The 32-year-old was originally up for Best Performance in a Show for his role on “The Chi”.
“In light of recent developments, we have removed Jason Mitchell as a nominee,” an MTV spokesperson told Variety.
