The university cited Bon Jovi’s contributions to music, as well as his humanitarian work with the Soul Kitchen community restaurants in New Jersey, in their decision to award him with the degree.

“The pay-it forward model [of the Soul Kitchen] serves in-need and paying customers with dignity and encourages their active participation through volunteer services,” said University of Pennsylvania president Amy Gutmann.

This isn’t the first time Bon Jovi has been made an honorary doctor. In 2001 he received a Doctorate of Humanities from Monmouth University.
