Late last year Mike “Beard Guy” Taylor of Walk Off the Earth suddenly passed away and now his bandmates are paying tribute in a new music video.
On Friday, the Canadian group released the music video for their single “Mike’s Song”, dedicated to the beloved father of two.
“Some of the strongest connections in our lives have been those forged through music,” the band said. “The connection we all had with Mike was a shining example of that. He was an incredible person that touched the lives of so many, and having the opportunity to commemorate his life and legacy with this song is an honour that we cherish greatly.”
In the video, the members of Walk Off the Earth honour Mike’s legacy by bringing new musical instruments to children in need.
Speaking to Billboard, band member Gianni Luminati Nicassio said, “We just sat around and thought about ‘What’s the next thing we can do to honour him?’ He was a massive advocate for MusiCounts and was really passionate about getting instruments in the hands of underprivileged children and schools that couldn’t afford instruments, ’cause he knew music saved his life as a kid. We wanted to do something in that vein so we took this on as the best way to honor him and continue his legacy.”
Singer Scott Helman tweeted out the song, calling it “beautiful” and revealing how much he misses his friend and co-musician.
After Mike’s death, the band held a memorial in their hometown of Burlington, Ont., featuring performances from Helman, Arkells, members of Barenaked Ladies and more.
The band has continued to perform in the months since, with tour dates planned through August this year.
