The day that Spice Girls fans have dreamed about for years has finally arrived, with Scary (Mel B), Baby (Emma Bunton), Sporty (Melanie Chisholm) and Ginger (Geri Horner) together again onstage for the group’s long-awaited reunion tour, marking the first time the women have performed together since opening the London Olympic Games in 2012.
Kicking off with a sold-out show at Dublin’s Croke Park, the tour’s first concert reportedly found the four (Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham opted to sit out the reunion tour) in fine voice as they dusted off their hits for an enthusiastic crowd estimated at more than 75,000.
Fireworks exploded overhead as the show opened with “Spice Up Your Life”, with the quartet decked out in modern — and, reportedly, age-appropriate — versions of their 1990s stage attire, with Horner wearing a renaissance-style dress that referenced her iconic Union Jack minidress, reports News.com.au.
“We’re four grown women dressed as a superhero, a princess, a queen, and a leopard — I hope you all get a good laugh out of it because it’s all for you,” Horner jokingly told the crowd.
While concertgoers reportedly took to social media to complain that it appeared the women were lip synching in the opening numbers, their voices could be clearly heard during “Viva Forever”, which inspired a singalong from the audience.
Ahead of the tour-opening show, the group’s members were particularly busy on social media to share their arrival in Dublin with fans:
The Spice Girls’ 13-date tour will wrap up with a three-night stint at London’s Wembley Stadium on June 13-15, with rumours that a North American tour may be announced after that.
