The former business manager of the late Stan Lee was arrested Saturday morning on charges of elder abuse involving the Marvel Comics icon.
As Deadline reports, a statement from the LAPD says that Keya Morgan was arrested in Arizona after being charged with elder abuse in Los Angeles County earlier this month.
Morgan took over control of Lee’s business affairs in February 2018, and allegedly isolated Lee from friends and family. He has subsequently been accused of embezzling or misappropriating $5 million of assets, according to court documents.
“Mr. Lee had a large estate worth over an estimated $50 million with no clear protection from opportunists who could insert themselves into his life and take control of it,” said the LAPD statement. “It had been revealed that no one had clear legal authority to act on Mr. Lee’s behalf; yet, Morgan exerted his control and influence over Lee.”
According to the LAPD, an elder abuse investigation was launched eight months prior to Lee’s death in November 2018 at age 95.
Morgan (also known as Keyarash Mazhari) is facing one felony count of false imprisonment of an elder adult, three felony counts of theft, embezzlement, and forgery or fraud against an elder adult, and a misdemeanor count of elder abuse. Bail has been set at $300,000.
“Morgan will go before a judge and eventually be extradited to Los Angeles to face charges,” the LAPD statement added.
