“Booksmart” is winning raves from critics, but the teen comedy from actor-turned-director Olivia Wilde (“House”) hasn’t seen those glowing translate into box-office success, with a dismal $8.7 million domestic opening during the competitive Memorial Day weekend.
In hopes of a box-office turnaround, Wilde took to social media to tout the comedy, urging moviegoers to check the the new flick, which in addition to a female director also features two female leads in Beanie Feldstein and Olivia Wilde.
“We are getting creamed by the big dogs out there and need your support,” wrote Wilde on Twitter, apparently referring to such box-office behemoths as “Aladdin”, “John Wick: Chapter 3” and “Avengers: Endgame”.
“Don’t give studios an excuse not to green-light movies by and about women,” she added.
Wilde’s message definitely did not go unheard, with stars including Taylor Swift, Ryan Reynolds, Seth MacFarlane, Mindy Kaling, Natalie Portman and more urging their social media followers to head to their local multiplex and buy a ticket for “Booksmart”.
Swift, in fact, reposted an Instagram Story from “Booksmart” actress Diana Silvers, adding her own caption: “JUST BOUGHT TICKETS!! Guys go see Booksmart cause in this house we support @oliviawilde.”
Meanwhile, here’s what other celebs had to say about the film:
