The mutants are back, and they’re ruling the box office during the all-important Memorial Day weekend in the U.S., reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Memorial Day marks the official kick-off of the summertime blockbuster movie season, and “X-Men: Apocalypse”; did not disappoint, raking in an estimated four-day domestic gross of $80 million to take the weekend’s #1 spot. The numbers were even better internationally, with “Apocalypse”; estimated to earn a global total of more than $265 million.

The latest “X-Men”; sequel made short work of fellow big-budget blockbuster “Alice Through the Looking Glass”;, which will take in an estimated $35 million for the four-day opening run — well below initial estimates that pegged the Disney flick’s opening weekend at $55 mil (it’s a safe bet the Johnny Depp divorce controversy didn’t do the film any favours).
“We’re very happy with this result as we introduce new characters in the X-Men universe,”; said Fox domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson of the opening weekend. “And for us to be at this number globally already means we’re in good shape.”;
