“America’s Got Talent” kicked off its 14th season on Tuesday, marking the first onscreen appearance of newbies Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough behind the judging table alongside returnees Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel.
All the judges, rookies and veterans alike, weren’t sure what to make of impressionist Greg Morton when he took to the stage to audition in the season premiere.
As Morton explains that he started off by making up funny voices for his action figures when he was a kid, the skepticism on the judges’ faces is plainly evident, even as the “Star Wars” theme begins to play and he solemnly intones, “A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…”
As Morton begins by impersonating Darth Vader, punctuated by buzzing light sabres, the judges look at each other quizzically.
Then comes Luke Skywalker getting his hand sliced off, followed by droids C3PO and R2D2, as Morton proceeds to act out key parts in “Star Wars” lore, completely entrancing the judges, the audience and even new host Terry Crews, who laughs and claps from the side of the stage.
By the time he wraps up with bang-on impressions of Jabba the Hut, Emperor Palpatine, Yoda and Chewbacca’s roar, Morton has the audience — and the judges — on their feet.
