There have been a lot of magicians on the “America’s Got Talent” stage over the course of the previous 13 seasons, but Tuesday’s season 14 premiere introduced a magic man who raised the bar — and all he needed was a deck of cards.
In his “AGT” debut in the season premiere, magician Eric Chien performed a series of close-up card tricks in a routine lasting nearly five minutes, with each trick proving to be increasingly dazzling.
For his closer, Chien tied together the previous tricks with a mind-boggling illusion involving a deck of cards, a pile of silver coins and a small wooden box, which culminated with a standing ovation from the audience and all four judges.
“I think I’m just as baffled as the audience,” admitted judge Gabrielle Union, while fellow judge Julianne Hough lauded his originality. “The fact is, you don’t have to compare yourself to anybody, and I’m really glad you showed up as you,” she said.
As always, judge (and let’s not forget “AGT” creator) Simon Cowell had the final word. “You know, Eric, genuinely this was in a different level,” he declared. “It was actually unbelievably good, and what I love about you as well is that you’re so humble, you don’t even know how good you are.”
Prepare to be just as awed by the judges by watching the entire routine in the video above.
