Arguably one of filmdom’s most famous scenes comes from “When Harry Met Sally”, taking place in New York’s famed Katz’s Deli, when Sally (Meg Ryan) demonstrates the ease with which she can fake an orgasm right at the table. The iconic scene culminates with an elderly diner at the next table (played by director Rob Reiner’s real-life mom) telling the waitress, “I’ll have what she’s having.”
In honour of that iconic scene and this year marking the 30th anniversary of “When Harry Met Sally”, Katz’s hosted a competition, inviting customers to re-enact the scene at the same table used in the movie, reports Forbes.
“Contestants of any gender can try and fake it better than the comedic actress and a panel of to be announced notable New Yorkers and special guests will judge who fakes it best,” added Forbes.
Lori White-Phillips, 52, was the first to give it a go. “I don’t normally fake it,” she proclaimed after her performance which resulted in an eruption of applause says the New York Post.
“He’s usually the one faking it,” she teased while motioning towards her partner sitting on the other side of the table.
“Now we know we’ll sweat during fake orgasms because we’re a little sweaty right now,” White-Phillips said. “I’ve seen the movie probably once or twice…I’m just delighted.”
Fans can win by posting their video on social media with the hashtags #katzsdeli #fakeitlikemeg and #whenharrymetsally. The winner will be picked based on the number of “likes” they receive.
This will be followed by a special anniversary movie screening on July 24 at Downtown Brooklyn’s Alamo Drafthouse, with each movie ticket including an “exclusive Katz’s Deli theatre experience including pastrami and corned beef carving stations on-site at the movie theatre known for its culinary and cocktail offerings.”
For fans of the film who can’t make it to NYC, Katz’s is offering its special “I’ll Have What She’s Having” package, shipping a package including Katz’s signature hand-carved pastrami and turkey (the sandwiches ordered by Sally and Harry in the scene), all the sandwich fixings, a limited-edition “When Harry Met Sally” t-shirt, some collectible Katz’s pins and a tote bag.
