Late Wednesday night, animal trainer Kirk Jarrett shared the tragic news in an Instagram dedicated to the lovable kitty.

Leo was one of four cats who helped bring Church to life in the latest film adaptation of the Stephen King classic.

In an interview with The AV Club earlier this year, Jarrett said, “Leo is a confident sit-stay cat. His role is as the undead Church; that was his whole purpose, to be the poster child. The cat you see all across the different platforms, and in the trailer, almost any time he’s in in the undead makeup—that was Leo.”

Leo’s fans mourned his passing in the comments on the Instagram post.

“So sorry to hear this, thoughts with him as he crosses the rainbow bridge and lives on in the heavy side lair,” wrote one person.

Another added, “Incredibly sad news! He was my favorite thing about Pet Sematary! Condolences to his human family and I hope he passed peacefully.”
