Sacha Baron Cohen admits his 2006 hit comedy “Borat” caused a few “casualties.”
In a sneak peek at Baron Cohen’s upcoming interview with The Daily Beast‘s “The Last Laugh” podcast, the 47-year-old actor confirmed one of those “casualties” was Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock’s marriage.
The Canadian beauty, 51, starred as herself in the Oscar-nominated flick which follows Borat (Baron Cohen), a popular reporter Kazakhstan who travels to America to film a documentary on what makes the country such a “great nation.” But once he arrives, he falls in love with the “Baywatch” star, doing anything to make her his wife.
Many film lovers believe Anderson was not aware of her major role in the movie, but Baron Cohen insists she was in on the joke. “She was the only person in on that movie, yes,” he told host Matt Wilstein. “Otherwise it would have been kidnapping.”
He later explained that he and Anderson filmed the “kidnapping” scene twice, “She’s actually amazingly brave. She lost two things. One, she lost a tiny bit of bone from her jaw, so she really should have gotten an award for that. And secondly, she lost a husband.”
“Later on, Kid Rock saw the movie, and I texted Pamela Anderson and asked, ‘How did it go? What did he think?’” said Baron Cohen. “And she texted back, ‘He’s getting divorced.’”
When Baron Cohen asked her why, she replied, “Because [of] the movie.”
And the former couple’s marriage was brief, lasting less than a year, “I thought it was a joke, but then a few weeks later they got divorced and they put as a reason for divorce: ‘Borat’,” he said. “So it had some casualties.”
Baron Cohen’s full episode of “The Last Laugh” will be released June 4.
