Meryl Streep Doesn’t Like The Term ‘Toxic Masculinity’: ‘Women Can Be Pretty F**king Toxic’ Too

The cast of “Big Little Lies” sat down for an event at Wing Soho moderated by Vanity Fair‘s editor in chief, Radhika Jones, where they spoke about everything from the upcoming second season to domestic violence.

As the show mainly focuses on domestic abuse, the event was hosted along with the National Network to End Domestic Violence. The discussion on men’s reactions to the hit HBO show came up, to which Meryl Streep, who joins the second season, said the show was “remarkable” because it makes men look at circumstances from a women’s point of view.

She also added that she doesn’t like the phrase “toxic masculinity.”

“Sometimes, I think we’re hurt. We hurt our boys by calling something toxic masculinity. I do. And I don’t find putting those two words together [works] because women can be pretty f***ng toxic. It’s toxic people. We have our good angles, and we have our bad ones,” the Academy Award-winning actress said.

“I think the labels are less helpful than what we’re trying to get to, which is a communication, direct, between human beings,” she noted. “We’re all in the boat together and you gotta make it work.”

It didn’t take much to get Streep to join the cast, the part in the book which her character is based on was named Mary Louise- Streep’s legal name. “So yeah, that’s how I got involved,” Streep added laughing.

Nicole Kidman was going to approach Streep with the part, but she was such a big fan of the show already she didn’t even need to look at the script.

“[My agent] said, ‘Don’t you want to read it [the script]?’ I said no,” Streep said, to which Reese Witherspoon who was seated next to her gasped. “It was the greatest thing on television, it really was. There isn’t a woman in this room who wouldn’t sign up.”

The cast teased season two of “Big Little Lies” without giving away too much. Kidman said that “it will be controversial.”

Shailene Woodley also got praise from both Streep and Witherspoon. “Shailene is just a miracle in this,” Streep said. “There’s a scene in episode two that’s just lights out,” Witherspoon added.
