Donald Trump was greeted by Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Monday ahead of his private lunch with the Queen.
The president touched down at London’s Stansted Airport before the highly anticipated meeting, with Trump previously confirming the state visit to Britain was “very important.”
Trump said as he left the White House Sunday: “It certainly will be very interesting,” CNN reported.
He was joined by his wife Melania for the three-day trip, with the pair being pictured at Buckingham Palace where gun salutes were fired in nearby Green Park and from the Tower of London.
The Queen took the president on a tour of the royal collection and Westminster Abbey before he went for afternoon tea with Charles and Camilla at Clarence House.
Upon showing Trump the pewter horse statue he and Melania gift Queen Elizabeth during last year’s visit, Trump was asked if he recognized it. “No,” he responded before Melania gently reminded him they were the ones that gave it.
In the evening, the state banquet took place where Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, along with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, all sparkled in their best gear. Kate Middleton went with the white theme in an Alexander McQueen dress, the Lover’s Knot tiara and the Queen Mother’s sapphire and diamond fringe earrings.
Both Queen Elizabeth and Trump gave speeches as customary even though by the looks of things, not everyone was that thrilled to hear the president speak.
While sipping $2,400 a bottle claret 1990 Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Trump took the chance to make a dig at the EU, noting during World War II Britain “ensured your destiny would always remain in your own hands.”
Queen Elizabeth’s speech went the other way as she reminded the president of the work their countries did “to ensure that the horrors of conflict would never be repeated.”
Trump tweeted that there was “tremendous crowds of well-wishers” out in London to greet him but those on the ground begged to differ.
This isn’t the first time Trump has met the Queen; the pair previously met for tea last summer.
