Nick Jonas reveals how wearing a purity ring as a young teen shaped his view of sex at a young age.
Jonas, now 27, along with his brothers Joe and Kevin, each wore a purity ring in their youth, which was meant to symbolize their abstinence from sex until marriage.
“What’s discouraging about that chapter of our life is that at 13 or 14 my sex life was being discussed,” he tells the Guardian. When at a young age, he was learning what the symbol actually meant to him.
“It was very tough to digest it in real time, trying to understand what it was going to mean to me, and what I wanted my choices to be while having the media speaking about a 13-year-old’s sex life. I don’t know if it would fly in this day and age. Very strange.”
Though the media obsession and reporting on the purity rings had a negative impact on Jonas, he says the meaning behind the ring remains important to him and is something he hopes to pass down to his future children.
“The values behind the idea of understanding what sex is, and what it means, are incredibly important,” he explains. “When I have children, I’ll make sure they understand the importance of sex, and consent, and all the things that are important.”
