It’s safe to say that E L James’ Fifty Shades trilogy was a big hit for readers around the world, selling over 125 million copies since its release in 2011.
Now, the author is back with The Mister, another erotic novel which just so happens to feature an unorthodox love story somewhat similar to Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey’s.
While chatting with ET Canada’s Carlos Bustamante in Toronto, the 56-year-old writer shares how her new novel compares to the Fifty Shades series.
“Well it’s interesting because I never considered Fifty Shades to be a BDSM book, but that’s sort of the background to it and you know Christian is into that particular lifestyle,” she explains. “In this other book the sex is very much character-driven so it’s a little bit more conventional, but it’s still there and you know conventional sex is sexy too.”
“I like sort of opposites attract kind of stories and this is about a very rich young man who comes into a huge inheritance and he falls in love with his housekeeper,” she adds.
As it turns out, James’ new novel was actually in the process of being written a few years before she started the erotic Fifty Shades series.
“I wrote a very rough draft of The Mister back in 2009 and it just wasn’t right and it’s taken me this long. I’ve rewritten it three times actually,” she explains.
Even though the Fifty Shades series was adapted into a wildly successful movie franchise, James isn’t too sure whether she wants this new venture to follow in its footsteps.
“‘We’ll see’ is what I think I’ll say about that. There have been discussions so we’ll see where they go,” the author reveals.
