U.S. President Donald Trump is clarifying his earlier comments describing Meghan Markle as “nasty,” explaining what he allegedly meant to say in an interview with Piers Morgan for “Good Morning Britain” slated to air on Wednesday morning in the U.K.
As the Daily Express reports, Morgan — a longtime acquaintance of Trump via his appearances on “The Celebrity Apprentice” — asked the president point-blank whether he thinks the Duchess of Sussex is “nasty.”
“They said some of the things that she said and It’s actually on tape,” the 73-year-old POTUS responded. “And I said: ‘Well, I didn’t know she was nasty.’”
Added Trump: “I wasn’t referring to she’s nasty. I said she was nasty about me. And essentially I didn’t know she was nasty about me.”
Trump then offered Markle some praise. “You know what? She’s doing a good job, I hope she enjoys her life,” he added. “I think she’s very nice.”
Morgan, however, decided to dig a bit more, and later asked Trump for further clarification.
“She was nasty to me,” Trump said in defence of his remark. “And that’s okay for her to be nasty. It’s not good for me to be nasty to her and I wasn’t.”
Moving on, Morgan then asked if Trump had the opportunity to speak with Markle’s husband, Prince Harry, whom he met during his visit with the Queen and Prince Charles.
“I did, I did and I congratulated him and I think he’s a terrific guy. The royal family is really nice.”
Clearly not content with Trump’s answer, Morgan asked “Did he say, ‘Come on — do you think my wife’s nasty?’”
Trump responded: “We didn’t talk about it… I was going to because it was so falsely put out there. And when you see that transcript and you see, it’s the exact opposite of what they said. Did you look at the transcript?”
Trump continued by stating that Harry was “far from frosty” toward him, asserting that rumours Harry didn’t want to talk to Trump were “quite the opposite.”
Added Trump: “In fact, he spent a lot of time talking to Ivanka and talking to my family. I went up — he couldn’t have been nicer. Couldn’t have been nicer… I think he’s great.”
