Miley Cyrus Apologizes To Feminist Cake Artist For Plagiarizing Pro-Choice Cake Design

Miley Cyrus issued an apology after making a political statement on social media — not for what she said, but for copying someone’s original cake art without any attribution.

On Tuesday, the “Wrecking Ball” singer shared a photo of herself on Instagram, licking a cake with an icing inscription reading, “Abortion is Healthcare,” teasing the photo as part of an upcoming collaboration with designer Marc Jacobs,  Planned Parenthood and her own Happy Hippie Foundation.

The photo caught the attention of feminist cake artist Becca Rea-Holloway, who created a near-identical cake and shared her own photo on Instagram — a year before Cyrus’ photo appeared.

Rea-Holloway called out Cyrus for the theft of her cake creation. “@mileycyrus just announced a collaboration with @marcjacobs @plannedparenthood @happyhippiefdn using this image,” she wrote, reposting Cyrus’ photo.

“It is a direct theft of my own original art work from May 2018, with no credit,” she continued. “It’s literally my exact handwriting, message, and concept. Swipe for comparison! Cake art is for everyone, but this is inexcusable.”

Cyrus, however, quickly stepped up and offered an apology, explaining that she didn’t realize she was copying Rea-Holloway’s original concept.

“We saw the image online and didn’t realize it was yours,” Cyrus responded in a comment, promising to give her credit. “We will absolutely tag you for your work.”
