On Monday, “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane shared an NBC News story about the New York State Senate passing legislation to put a ban on the practice of declawing cats.

In his tweet, MacFarlane outlined his reasons for supporting the new ban.

Some cat owners and veterinarians have also supported the ban, believing declawing to be cruel.

The measure faces opposition, though, from the New York State Veterinary Medical Society, which has argued that declawing should be allowed as a last resort for cases of cats that won’t stop scratching humans or furniture, or in cases where an owner is at risk of infection.

If the ban is signed into law, it will be the first such ban in any state in the U.S., with advocates hoping it leads to more states following suit.
