Madonna released her music video “Dark Ballet” on Friday and, well… it’s dark.
The video features some haunting images and lots of religious symbolism, including a group dressed in dark robes, close-ups of crucifixes and people bound with rope, evoking the heavy religious symbolism in the video for “Like A Prayer”. Madonna herself appears clad in a black-lace veil.

In a statement, Madonna revealed the song and video were inspired by the story of Joan of Arc.
“She fought the English and she won, still the French were not happy,” she said. “Still they judged her. They said she was a man, they said she was a lesbian, they said she was a witch, and, in the end, they burned her at the stake, and she feared nothing. I admire that.”
“Dark Ballet” is the fifth song to be released from her upcoming Madame X album, set to be released on June 14.
