Fresh off her Oscar win for “The Favorite”, Olivia Colman will soon be seen in a very different role in “Them That Follow”, a disturbing drama set in a secluded rural enclave where the locals tempt venomous snakes to bite them in order to prove their faith in the Lord.
A new trailer for the upcoming film features Coleman as Hope Slaughter and former “Justified” star Walton Goggins, who plays a snake-handling preacher whose daughter (Alice Englert) is preparing for her wedding.
“Deep in rural Appalachia, Pastor Lemuel Childs (Goggins) rules over an isolated community of serpent handlers, an obscure sect of Pentecostals who willingly take up venomous snakes to prove themselves before God,” reads the film’s synopsis. “As his devoted daughter, Mara (Englert) prepares for her wedding day, under the watchful eye of Hope Slaughter (Colman), a dangerous secret is unearthed and she is forced to confront the deadly tradition of her father’s church.”
Other stars in the film include Kaitlyn Dever, Thomas Mann, Lewis Pullman and comedian Jim Gaffigan taking on a rare dramatic role.
“Them That Follow” hits theatres on Aug. 2.
