Kylie Jenner Hosts A ‘Handmaid’s Tale’-Themed Party And One Of The Series’ Stars Calls It ‘A Little Tacky’

Kylie Jenner is feeling the wrath of Twitter after sharing photos and video on social media chronicling a birthday party she threw, choosing “The Handmaid’s Tale” as the theme.

To celebrate the birthday of pal Anastasia “Stassie” Karanikolaou, Jenner transformed her home into Gilead, the dystopian America in which Margaret Atwood’s novel and spinoff TV series are set.

Party guests were costumed in the red nun-like attire of series star Elisabeth Moss and her fellow handmaids, while People reports that specialty cocktails included “praise be vodka” and “under his eyes tequila.”

Guests at the soiree also included Jenner’s assistant Victoria Villarroel, her makeup artist Ariel Tejada, Star Lash Extensions CEO Yris Palmer and Sofia Richie, current girlfriend of Kourtney Kardashian’s ex Scott Disick, who shared her transformation into a handmaid in a series of pics she share on Instagram.

Given that “The Handmaid’s Tale” is a dark, disturbing drama set in a world were women are enslaved by men, some people understandably appalled, particularly given the anti-abortion legislation being passed in numerous U.S. states and took to Twitter to share their thoughts:

Even one of the series’ stars admitted he found the whole thing to be “a little tacky.”

During a Tuesday appearance on Global‘s “The Talk”, Bradley Whitford — who plays Commander Lawrence on the show — shared his thoughts on the party theme.

“I don’t know, it seems a little tacky. That costume is so kind of iconic, and it’s interesting how it’s changed from initially a sort of symbol of oppression to now, as the show is moving ahead, to a symbol of resistance,” he said.

“So, yeah, a cocktail party seems to sort of dash all that significance,” the former “West Wing” star added with a laugh.
