‘Pennyworth’ Director And Writer Break Down Batman’s Butler Alfred’s Origin Story

Before he was Batman’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth had quite an eventful life.

In the trailer for the new series “Pennyworth”, Jack Bannon stars as a twentysomething Alfred, fresh off his service as a soldier for the British SAS and now working for a private security company.

His new client? Billionaire Thomas Wayne, the future father of Bruce Wayne. “I’ll do my best to keep you alive,” Alfred tells Wayne in the trailer, which features plenty of action, romance and gorgeous shots of 1960s London.

“Alfred’s story came first. It’s a character that everybody knows and loves that hasn’t been explored at all,” said executive producer and writer Bruno Heller during Comic-Con. “But on the other hand everyone knows what happens in the end. So it’s telling an origin story with a great deal of freedom. It’s both within the Batman world but a bit more relatable, I think.”

“The minute I read Bruno’s script, I knew this was a story worth telling and one I wanted to be a part of,” added director and executive producer Danny Bannon. “I had to go out and buy a suit, because I didn’t have a suit… I had to get a haircut. I had to get a tie…”

The 10-episode drama also stars Paloma Faith, Emma Corrin and Jason Flemyng. “Pennyworth” premieres on Showcase in Fall 2019.
