It was an emotional night for Ariana Grande.
The “Breathin” singer broke down in tears during the “Sweetener” world-tour stop in her late ex-boyfriend Mac Miller’s hometown of Pittsburgh, PA.
During the 24-song setlist, the “7 rings” songstress was emotional from the start. While opening with her a cappella track “Raindrops (An Angel Cried)”, which is rumoured to be about the end of her relationship with Miller, the 25-year-old got choked up and was unable to finish the song.
During the show’s encore performance of “Thank U, Next”, which references her famous exes, Grande started crying while singing the line “Wish I could say, ‘Thank you’ to Malcolm / ‘Cause he was an angel.”
Thankfully, her devoted Arianators screamed the lyrics and cheered her on while she regained her composure.
Before hitting the stage, fans took to social media to share that Grande paid tribute to the late rapper by reserving an empty seat for him while also playing several of his tracks through the speakers of the PPG Paints Arena.
That same night, Anderson .Paak’s R&B group, the Free Nationals, released their new single “Time”, featuring Miller. This new track is the first posthumous release for the late rapper.
Grande and Miller dated from summer 2016 to spring 2018 before suddenly breaking up.
Miller passed away at the age of 26 in September 2018 due to an accidental overdose.
