The Toronto-born musician released the new track on Thursday, which will be featured on his upcoming album Pick Your Poison.

The 43-year-old got candid about the message behind the new song, saying in a statement to ET Canada: “Testament to those who have had to fight for much in life, but have never given up.”

“Toronto is alive and coming together in a way that we haven’t seen in decades,” he said. “It’s a fusion of different sounds, different eras, and different energies that all make sense to the globe, when heard together. This is Toronto. This is #RUN.”

Following the single’s release, Kardinal took to Instagram to share with his fans about how the song came to be, revealing that he “fell out of love with making music for a little while.”

“Hip-Hop didn’t feel the same to me and I felt like I didn’t have the passion to create the way I wanted to. I wasn’t sure if i could (or wanted to) fit in to the current landscape,” he continued.

“Go where you are celebrated, not tolerated!”. So short story time-I fell out of love with making music for a little while. Hip-Hop didn’t feel the same to me and I felt like i didn’t have the passion to create the way I wanted to. I wasn’t sure if i could (or wanted to) fit in to the current landscape…fast forward to a legendary night with my “hero turned brother”, Dave Chappelle. After many drinks at his spot in Yellowsprings, before his famous “Juke Joint” where he asked me to perform, earrrrly one morning, he asked me when i was dropping new music. I told him what i felt about everything and how i became disenchanted-but right then he told me he was a huge Kardinal fan(🤯)! He said to me that if he was a fan, that meant that there were thousands, if not millions of people across America, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe and the rest of the world who were fans too! I thought Dave was just drunk(🥳), but the following year, he took one of my demos and put it in his Netflix special “Equanimity”, during the closing credits (still unbelievable🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿)…fast forward to 2019 and people from London, New York, Jamaica, Miami, France, LA, Trinidad, MY CITY OF Toronto and everywhere in between have been asking me for NEW MUSIC…well today is the day! Produced by ME, my new joint #RUN is out NOW!!!!EVERYWHERE!!! Thank you to my day one fans and to the people who are just discovering me for the first time. If you love the vibes, please share, post, stream and buy!! #RUN is from my forthcoming project called “Pick Your Poison”. Mans ain’t trying to fit in to whagwaan-I’m lighting my own fire and bunnin up everything in my path. Love, manners and respect. I ain’t never #RUN from a fight and I never will…love to @iampauljones and @strizzzyeverywhere for this vid too🥳😂🤘🏿

However, the rapper shared that when he met his “hero turned brother,” Dave Chappelle, everything turned around for him.

“I told him what I felt about everything and how I became disenchanted,” Kardinal shared. “But right then he told me he was a huge Kardinal fan! He said to me that if he was a fan, that meant that there were thousands, if not millions of people across America, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe and the rest of the world who were fans too!”

As it turns out, the Canadian rapper’s song “Reaching Through the Darkness” actually appeared exclusively Chappelle’s Netflix special “Equanimity”.

“Fast forward to 2019 and people from London, New York, Jamaica, Miami, France, LA, Trinidad, MY CITY OF Toronto and everywhere in between have been asking me for NEW MUSIC… well today is the day!” his post continued.
