There’s big money to be made in hip-hop, as revealed in Forbes‘ new list of the five wealthiest rappers.
The venerable business magazine’s latest list follows the news that Jay-Z has become the first rapper to become a billionaire, and it looks like he promises to be the first of many rappers poised to break the billion-dollar mark.
As expected, Jay-Z tops the list thanks to an estimated net worth of $1 billion, a figure that swells to $1.4 billion when combined with the wealth of his wife Beyonce.
“Jay-Z’s entire life is the real blueprint,” hip-hop trailblazer Fab 5 Freddy tells Forbes. “He’s one of the best examples in our lifetime of one who’s truly achieved the American dream and billionaire status.”
Landing in second place is Dr. Dre, with an estimated worth of $800 million. As Forbes explains, a healthy chunk of that comes from the $3-billion sale of Beats headphones to Apple in 2013 (he owned about a quarter of the company).
In third place: Diddy, whose net worth is estimated at $500 million thanks to diversified holdings including the cable TV network Revolt, his clothing line Sean John and Ciroc vodka.
While Kanye West has had his financial difficulties in the past, his worth is estimated at $240 million thanks to Adidas luring him and his Yeezy shoes from Nike, in addition to his Yeezy fashion line. West places fourth on Forbes‘ list.
Finally, at fifth place is Drake, with an estimated worth of $150 million. In addition to the 32-year-old Canadian’s revenue from recording and touring, he also rakes in cash from his Virginia Black whiskey.
