Anyone who grew up in the late 1960s will likely remember “The Banana Splits Adventure Hour”, a trippy, psychedelic Saturday-morning kids show that featured a quartet of weird-looking creatures — the titular Banana Splits — who got into zany hijinks and played in a rock band.

For reasons unexplained, the characters are making a comeback in “The Banana Splits Movie”, an upcoming feature based on the TV show that takes the story in a decidedly weird direction.

How weird? Weird enough that the film has an R rating, and reveals the Splits are actually homicidal robots with a thirst for human blood.

According to the film’s synopsis, “The beloved children’s show is back… with a vengeance, a horrible, bloody vengeance.”

Don’t look for the film at your local multiplex; it will be debuting on blu ray and DVD this summer, and will air on the U.S. Syfy channel after that.
