Beyonce has made it a habit to surprise her fans, and she’s done it again by giving a brief on-camera interview — because it’s the first interview she’s given since 2013.
The rare interview took place backstage at the Wearable Art Gala in Los Angeles, which she attended last week alongside husband Jay Z, daughter Blue Ivy and mother Tina Knowles.
While the interview will be the focus of an upcoming special on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network, a brief excerpt has been making the rounds on social media.
Clocking in at just under three minutes, the clip features Beyonce wearing the opulent “Lion King” costume she debuted on Instagram earlier this month.
In the clip, she expresses her excitement over the upcoming premiere of “The Lion King”, explaining that it will be one of the few occasions when she and husband Jay-Z can hit the red carpet accompanied by their three children.
“This is one of the only red carpets I get to do with my family,” she says in the clip. “My daughter gets to dress up and my husband, this year it’s ‘Lion King’ which, obviously I play Nala. So it’s the first time I’m doing any appearance as a person that stars in ‘The Lion King’, which is something that I grew up watching and I’m so excited for my kids to see but it means even more to share this experience and culture of ‘The Lion King’ with my mother and my family.”
Much of the clip features Beyonce speaking about the WACO Theater Center, founded by her mother and her husband, Richard Lawson, with a goal of giving emerging young artists a space where they can share their work.
“My mother and Richard believe that art is a representation of our history,” she explains. “Right now there’s a shift, in these incredibly talented emerging black artists getting their due. I love so many great African-American artists, and I’m just so excited that these young black artists are getting their due.”
She added: “My mother has always been an entrepreneur, and she’s taking that and teaching these young women that they can be entrepreneurs, exposing them to things that they would probably never see,” she added. “She dedicates her life to it, and she’s found the perfect partner, Richard, who is just a kind, honest, beautiful human being who dedicates his life to the well-being of these kids. It’s about the impact that you’ve had on this Earth. My mother always believed that every person in this world has a purpose, and I think her gift is helping people realize their purpose a lot faster.”
As you’d expect, the Beyhive is buzzing like never before over Queen Bey’s new interview, judging by comments on Twitter:
