An Italian man has been arrested with his wife in Thailand after being accused of posing as George Clooney to sell clothes online.
Francesco Galdelli, 58, and Vanja Goffi, 45, who have been wanted on an Interpol red notice since 2013, had fled their home country to avoid arrest, the BBC reported.
Galdeli was arrested on Saturday near the city of Pattaya on suspicion of staying in the country illegally. His wife was arrested on suspicion of overstaying her visa.
The arrest comes after Clooney testified against the couple in a 2010 trial, insisting he never approved any affiliation with the bogus clothing company “GC Exclusive by George Clooney”.
AFP claimed Thai police said in a statement: “During interrogation, Francesco confessed to claiming to be George Clooney and opening a clothes business to trick people into sending money.”
The pair, who had reportedly been living in Thailand since 2014, were also thought to have been selling fake Rolex watches online.
Galdelli was arrested in 2014, but escaped during his trial.
ET Canada has contacted Clooney’s rep for comment.
