“The Bachelorette” frontrunner Jed Wyatt is in some hot water after news broke that he allegedly had a girlfriend before appearing on Hannah Brown’s season of the reality series.
In an exclusive interview with People, the Nashville musician’s former girlfriend Haley Stevens revealed that she had been in a relationship with him for four months before he left for the show.
“We spent the night together the night before he headed to L.A.,” Stevens shared. “He told me [the show] was just an obstacle and we’d be stronger on the other side because of it.”
As it turns out, Wyatt actually informed Stevens about his motives for joining the show, telling her that “it’s not real. It’s acting.”
“He said, ‘It’s probably not going to happen, but it’s a huge opportunity. I’m only doing this for my music.’ He only did it for his career,” Stevens, 26, said. “He wanted a platform. He kept telling me, ‘I don’t want my dad to have to help me pay rent anymore.’ He said he only wanted to be top five… to be a major player so that it would be beneficial.”
The fellow Nashville musician and Wyatt, 25, kept their relationship going, eventually taking a romantic vacation to the Bahamas after it was announced that he would be joining “The Bachelorette”. The couple even said “I love you” for the first time during that trip.
“He called me when he landed in L.A.,” she said of the last time she spoke to Wyatt before he left for the show. “He said, ‘I love you, and I’ll call you when I get back.’”
However, since contestants have to give up access to their phones, anxiety set in for Stevens.
“I was following along on spoiler accounts, trying to figure out when my boyfriend was going to come home,” she said.
“I was terrified that he would fall in love with Hannah,” she added. “In the beginning I felt bad [watching the show] because I thought he loved me and was faking dating her. But then I thought, my boyfriend could be engaged to someone else. Seeing him kissing her for the first time was the worst day.”
Now, Stevens has no idea how season 15 of “The Bachelorette” ended and whether or not Wyatt got down on one knee to propose to Brown.
“Everything in me wants to believe that he meant everything he said and got caught up in [the show],” she explained. “I don’t believe he’s a terrible person, but it’s a terrible situation. And part of me thinks I was the backup plan and he wanted me to be here in case it didn’t work out. I feel 100 per cent betrayed.”
ET Canada reached out to the rep for “The Bachelorette”, but they had no comment.
