Alex Trebek loves hockey, and hockey loves Alex Trebek.

The “Jeopardy!” host and noted hockey mega-fan was on hand at the NHL Awards on Wednesday night to hand out the Hart Memorial Trophy for League MVP.

After being introduced to the stage by the night’s host Jon Hamm, the 78-year-old, who was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, received a huge standing ovation from the audience.

“Thank you, Jon; thank you, Las Vegas; and thanks to the hockey world for all your support. Growing up in Canada, you realize very early on that hockey is in your DNA,” Trebek said once the applause finally died down.

He also reminisced about watching his favourite player of all time, Gordie Howe, win the Hart Trophy several times through the ’50s and ’60s.

This year’s trophy went to the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Nikita Kucherov.
