Toronto Fashion Week Goes Retro!

Day one of Toronto’s World MasterCard Fashion Week had us seeing flashbacks. The highly anticipated Pink Tartan fall runway show was all about the ’60s. And designer Kimberley Newport-Mimran tells us her biggest inspiration was Jessica Lange’s character from season one of American Horror Story.

“I think she’s a brilliant actress,”; she says of the star who plays damaged mother Constance Langdon on the show. “She’s always so put together but there’s something underlying that’s dark, that you can’t put your finger on.”; Floral patterns on black is one look Kimberley says reflects this sombre mood. Also featured  in the collection, of course the brand’s favourite  colour pink and the banded blonde bob, a signature hairstyle from 50 years ago.

Over at Bustle, it was a British invasion on the runway. But along with mod’s signature tailoring, bright vintage-inspired prints with a ’70s vibe also were spotted in the brand’s menswear collection.

Husband and wife collaborators Shawn Hewson and Ruth Promislow say their designs are as bold as the man who wears them.

“Mixing and matching with reckless abandon”;, is how they describe their method, and  it’s  the way they want their customer to put together his wardrobe. “That’s the guy we want to dress, the kind of guy that has the confidence to pull that off and dress fearlessly.”;
