Alan Cumming Wants To See The End Of Terms Like ‘Gay Actor’: ‘You Wouldn’t Say ‘Straight Actor”

Alan Cumming is filling a much-needed television role as the first openly gay lead on an American network drama.

The Scottish-American actor sat down with “People TV” where he revealed that the first season of “Instinct” was “tense”. But after the show aired everything calmed down, the “things they were worried about were things people liked the most.”

As the show heads into season two, Cumming made the choice that even though it is a police show, he wouldn’t carry a gun since “one less person wielding a gun on TV can only be a positive thing.”

When asked how that changed his scenes, he decided that while all the actors around him are carrying, he would just walk into the room like he had an “invisible force” around him.

“I didn’t tell anyone while filming” and at the end, he stated, “I don’t know if you realized but I haven’t used a gun this entire season.” No one had even noticed.

“Instinct” has made waves as the lead character is openly gay, something Cumming says is a “great honour.” It wasn’t until 2018 that “finally” there was the first gay man as a lead on a U.S network.

And while progress has been made “The Good Wife” alum says that society has to get to the point where titles like “gay actor” or “queer actor” aren’t used. “You wouldn’t say ‘straight actor’,” Cumming further explains.

His ultimate hope is that his role on “Instinct” will help “desensationalize” LGBTQ actors on television.
