Julia Roberts is a Hollywood heavyweight and her long-lasting career has proved it.
The actress, 51, who is Marie Claire’s August issue cover star, opened up about how her career has managed to stand the test of time as social media continues to change the game.

“Things have changed a lot,” she confessed. “When I started out, there was no social media, there was barely internet. People couldn’t take pictures with their phones. There were logical steps in a career progression: you made a film and if it was successful, you had the opportunity to work again. If your second film was successful, you could be paid more and get a new role. Now, someone can just pop out of nowhere and make it, which I guess is very destabilizing. Building a career was a much more methodical endeavour 30 years ago.”
But with her iconic career, she can afford to be more choosy when it comes to roles.

“I have always been. Look at my films. How could I have been more selective?” Roberts said. “No, I probably meant that, today, I’m more careful about the films I choose because we have a family and it’s not just about me. My husband and I try not to work at the same time. It can happen, but… there are my projects, Danny’s projects, the children’s school planning, it’s all about scheduling.”
Along with her enduring status as a Hollywood A-lister has come confidence.
“I don’t think anyone is born confident,” she admitted. “Or if they are, I don’t think they stay that way. But at this point in my life, I really believe I have a good understanding of who I am.”
