Disney has found its Ariel!
Halle Bailey, of R&B duo Chloe x Halle, has been cast in the iconic role in the upcoming live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid”.
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” director Rob Marshall said in a statement.
Bailey will join Disney’s growing list of up-and-coming actresses starring as the beloved princess in their live-action classics, including Lily James (“Cinderella”), Emma Watson (“Beauty And The Beast”) and, most recently, Naomi Scott (“Aladdin”).
Bailey’s casting earned a shoutout from another famous Halle — Halle Berry, who congratulated her namesake in a sweet tweet to declare that “Halles get it DONE.”
Disney has reportedly been eyeing a rumoured dream cast including Melissa McCarthy as evil sea witch Ursula, Jacob Tremblay as Ariel’s bestie Flounder and Awkwafina as seagull Scuttle.
For the upcoming remake, Alan Menken, who was behind the 1989 original’s music, will team up Lin-Manuel Miranda for new songs as well as an updated score.
Production is anticipated to begin in early 2020.
