While President Trump’s miltary-themed “Salute to America” celebration is underway in Washington, D.C. (weather permitting), some celebrities are taking some time on the Fourth of July to shine the spotlight on the asylum seekers — many of them children separated from parents — who remain caged in detention camps, imprisoned in conditions described by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as “unconscionable.”
Padma Lakshmi, host of “Top Chef”, used her culinary skills to create a special Independence Day-themed pie with a succinct message, reading: “CLOSE THE CAMPS.”
Sharing a photo of her pie on Twitter, she wrote, “A truly American pie for the bbq today.”
Madonna also took to Twitter to offer a similar sentiment, albeit without the pastry, sharing several photos of children sleeping on the floor covered by space blankets and marching in single file in a detention camp.
“This is America!!!” she wrote.
Other celebs to mark the Fourth of July by pointing to the horrific treatment migrant children are receiving at these camps include Chelsea Clinton, Amber Tamblyn, “Avengers” director Joss Whedon and more.
